Buying the right geotextile membrane can be unclear if you are not working with it regularly. The type, weight and application all matter, and using the wrong one leads to poor ground performance.

This page answers the common questions we get around product selection, installation, ordering and delivery. The aim is to help you choose the correct membrane for your ground conditions and get it right first time.

Ordering

All your queries answered regarding ordering.

How do I place an order?

Add products to your cart, check quantities and proceed to checkout. Enter delivery details, choose shipping and complete payment. You will receive an order confirmation by email.

If you are unsure on the correct membrane, contact us before ordering with your ground type, use and build-up. This avoids ordering the wrong grade.

Can I amend my order after placing it?

Yes, but only before dispatch. Once the order leaves us, it cannot be changed. Contact us quickly if you need to adjust quantities or swap products.

Do I need an account to place an order?

No. You can order as a guest. Setting up an account just makes future orders faster and lets you track your past purchases in one place.

Do you offer bulk pricing or trade rates?

Yes. We supply both trade and retail customers. If you’re buying in bulk or placing regular orders, fill in the form on our Contact Us page and we’ll get back to you with trade pricing.

Can I get help choosing before I buy?

Yes. Send details of your project, for example driveway on clay, French drain, paddock, patio build-up. We will recommend a specific product and grade.

How do I choose the right geotextile membrane?

Start with the job:

  • Driveways, roads, weak clay ground → woven membrane for stabilisation
  • Drainage, soakaways, French drains → non-woven for filtration
  • General separation under patios or gravel → non-woven mid-range
  • Heavy use or poor ground → higher gsm non-woven or woven + grid

If the ground is soft, wet or pumping fines, you need separation and strength. If water movement is the issue, you need permeability and filtration.

What is the difference between woven and non-woven membranes?

  • Woven = high strength, low stretch, used for stabilisation and load support
  • Non-woven = permeable, filters water, prevents fines migration

They do different jobs. In some builds, both are used together.

Will a membrane stop my driveway sinking?

It helps, but only as part of the full build-up. A woven membrane stabilises weak ground and reduces rutting. It does not replace proper sub-base depth or compaction.

Can membranes stop weeds?

Yes, but only if installed correctly. Overlap joints by at least 300mm and cover fully. Any exposed gaps will allow growth. Woven membranes block light better, non-woven are secondary weed control.

Can membranes be used under gravel, soil, or paving slabs?

Yes. This is one of the main uses. It separates sub-grade from sub-base, stops mixing, and keeps the structure stable.

What membrane do I use for drainage?

A non-woven membrane. It allows water through while holding back soil. Used in French drains, soakaways and around pipes to prevent clogging.

Can I cut membranes to size?

Yes. Use a sharp knife or scissors. Cut on a flat surface and allow for overlaps before cutting.

Do you sell pegs and accessories?

Yes. Ground pegs, pins and jointing tape. These are needed to secure overlaps and stop movement during installation.

Are your products environmentally friendly?

Most are made from polypropylene or polyester. They are inert in the ground and designed for long-term use.

How long will a membrane last?

When installed and covered correctly, it will last decades. UV exposure is the main risk, so always cover promptly.

Installation and Maintenance

How do I install a geotextile membrane?

  1. Clear the area of weeds, stones, and debris.
  2. Level and compact the ground.
  3. Roll out the membrane and overlap sheets by at least 300 mm.
  4. Secure with ground pegs or weights.
  5. Cover the membrane with gravel, soil, or paving as required.

If you’re installing under a driveway or patio, make sure the membrane sits between your sub-base and soil for stability.

Do I need overlaps?

Yes. Without overlap, fines will migrate through joints and cause failure.

Can I join membranes together?

Yes. Overlap and pin as standard. Tape can be used where required, especially in drainage or protection layers.

Can I install in wet conditions?

Yes, but take care. Soft ground may require a heavier grade or reinforcement grid to prevent movement during installation.

Do membranes need maintenance?

No. Once covered, they’re maintenance-free. If exposed, check occasionally for wear or debris buildup.

Can I reuse a membrane?

Only if it is clean and undamaged. Any contamination or tearing reduces performance.

What is the most common installation mistake?

  • Using too light a grade
  • Not overlapping joints
  • Placing membrane in the wrong layer
  • Not covering it quickly

These lead to failure, not the product itself.
