Non Woven Geotextile Membranes

Non Woven Geotextile Membranes

Non woven geotextile membranes are used to control separation and filtration within ground constructions while allowing water to drain freely. Manufactured from polypropylene fibres using needle punched or bonded processes, they form a permeable structure that prevents soil fines migrating into clean aggregate layers.

In practice, non woven membranes are used beneath driveways, patios, paths and paved areas to keep the sub base stable and free draining. By preventing contamination of the stone layer, they help maintain load bearing capacity and reduce long term settlement. They are also widely used in French drains, soakaways and attenuation systems, where consistent filtration is essential to avoid silting and loss of performance.

The grade of membrane selected must match both the ground conditions and the level of loading. Lightweight membranes are suitable for landscaping and pedestrian areas on firm ground. Heavier grades are required where vehicles are present, sub grades are weak or installation stresses are higher. In specialist applications, very heavy duty non woven membranes are used to protect geomembranes, soakaway crates and other structural components from puncture and abrasion.

Construction method is just as important as membrane weight. Needle punched non woven membranes offer greater flexibility and resistance to damage during installation, making them better suited to clay soils, angular aggregates and trafficked environments. Performance should always be assessed based on permeability, puncture resistance and durability, not gsm alone.

All non woven membranes in this category are designed to be buried within the ground. Correct placement on a prepared sub grade, sufficient overlap, typically 300 to 500mm depending on conditions, and prompt coverage with aggregate are essential to achieve reliable long term performance.
