Galfan Coated Welded Mesh Gabion Basket 0.55m x 0.55m x 0.55m

This 0.55 x 0.55 x 0.55m gabion basket is manufactured from welded steel mesh using 3mm Galfan coated wire. Galfan is a zinc aluminium alloy coating, typically 95 percent zinc and 5 percent aluminium, offering significantly improved corrosion resistance compared to standard galvanised finishes. In practical terms, this provides a much longer service life in ground contact and exposed conditions.

The basket is supplied flat packed and assembled on site using stainless steel C clips, with Galfan lacing wire included for tying corners, lids and adjoining baskets. Once filled with angular stone, the basket acts as a mass retaining unit, relying on its weight rather than fixings or concrete footings. A firm, well compacted base is required, but excavation and traditional foundations are usually unnecessary for low height structures.

This size is commonly used for garden retaining walls, edging, terracing, erosion control and decorative landscaping features. It is also suitable for riverbanks, canals and drainage channels where permeability is required. Water can pass freely through the basket, reducing hydrostatic pressure and lowering the risk of waterlogging behind the structure.

For stacked walls or areas with retained soil behind, baskets should be tied together and leaned back slightly to improve stability. In finer soils, a non woven geotextile membrane should be installed behind the gabions to prevent fines washing through the stone fill.

This basket is not intended to support buildings, structural foundations or heavy surcharges. Taller walls or trafficked areas may require deeper baskets, stepped layouts or engineering input.
