Pennine Manufacturing specialise in steel wire mesh products, most commonly gabion baskets used for retaining and ground stabilisation works.

Gabions are filled with stone to form gravity retaining walls, embankment support and erosion control structures. The mass of the stone provides stability, while the open face allows natural drainage through the wall. This reduces hydrostatic pressure build up behind the structure, which is a common cause of retaining wall failure.

In domestic landscaping, gabion baskets are used for garden retaining walls, raised beds and boundary features. They are particularly useful on sloping sites where soil needs to be retained without constructing a solid concrete wall.

In commercial and civil engineering projects, gabions are installed for highway embankments, riverbank stabilisation and coastal protection. Correct base preparation and a suitable geotextile membrane behind the wall are important to prevent loss of fines while allowing water to pass through.

Basket specification depends on wall height, loading and ground conditions. Heavier gauge wire and appropriate internal bracing are required for taller or heavily loaded structures.

Gabion systems are robust and permeable, but they rely on proper installation, suitable stone fill and adequate foundation support to perform long term.
